Luthier Ken Miller : KenMiller Guitars

About Ken Miller and KenMiller Guitars from

Ken Miller started his guitar making career in 1962 when his guitar needed repairs and he fixed it himself. Soon other people were bringing their instruments to him to repair. In the early 70's he spent several years working at Guild Guitars in Westerly, Rhode Island in a variety of positions including assistant foreman in final assembly.

In the following years Ken focused mostly on repairs while managing to make one to four instruments per year. With his wife, Virginia, designing and cutting inlays, they are now making guitars full time. While specializing in fretted instruments Ken has made banjos, balalaikas, dulcimers, mandolins, guitars, and ukuleles. In fact, he has created almost anything that caught his fancy or the interest of a customer. He tends to make guitars in "traditional" styles although his Acousteel guitars use an adaptation of the new "Kasha-Schneider" bracing concept.

This is what Ken has to say about their work...
Specializing in fretted instruments, we design and create each individually handmade instrument with an endless variety of options available to the customer - including woods (and extra fancy woods), inlays of shell, stone, metals and wood, and carving. We enjoy making guitars with traditional materials, and are proud that the Brazilian Rosewood, Koa, and Ivory that we use are all from salvage or renewable harvest sources, so as not to contribute to the global depletion of these materials - while honoring those already harvested by recycling. These instruments are our interpretations of traditional art and designs which have inspired us and others.

Ken adds, We believe that a world class instrument is made of three essential components: (1) It must have quality sound and good volume, (2) it must be comfortable to play, and (3) it must be visually artistic and appealing. The final product is not only a result of our skills, but it is also an accumulation of the energy that is transferred from the guitar makers into the very wood itself. We believe that our intention to create the very best guitar possible and our love of the work are incorporated into the essence of the instrument. We invite you to play our instruments and experience this essence.

Ken's offerings include Acoustic steel string, Classical, Flamenco, Guitarcimer, Mandolin, Ukulele etc.
