About Tim McKnight and McKnight Guitars from http://www.mcknightguitars.com/
Tim McKnight founded McKnight Guitars in 1992.
He previously honed his craft over many years of repairing instruments built by others. In the process, Tim came to appreciate the elegance of guitar designs that work—and learned a great deal from those that didn’t. This invaluable experience provided Tim with the perfect environment in which to develop his own style of fine custom guitars, artfully blending tradition with innovation to achieve a new level of excellence. He studied with world renowned luthier Ervin Somogyi to even further hone his craft. Tim is a member of the Guild of American Luthiers (GAL) and the Association of Stringed Instrument Artisans (ASIA).
It is through association with professional organizations such as ASIA that he stays on top of all the latest innovations in the custom instrument marketplace. Tim also shares knowledge and networks with other luthiers and players on Internet forums such Acoustic Player Magazine, 13th Fret, Acoustic Guitar Forum, and Luthier's Forum.
Tim’s wife, Mary, handles the PR end of the business with style and grace. Contact Mary with any questions, comments, or even if you just want to chat. She stays in contact with McKnight guitar owners via her monthly and sometimes weekly email letters of interest. She cross promotes all customers and keeps them all tied together as a huge extended family of guitar enthusiasts.
Mary plays a vital role in designing the aesthetics of spec guitars or assisting customers with their own unique guitar. She has a wonderful eye for design and her designs such as: "The Diamond", "The Eagle", "The Autumn Cougar" and "The Lilly" guitars have gained her world wide recognition.
Mary is responsible for taking digital pictures and sending them to our customers throughout the process. She likes to keep them involved in the entire process from inception to delivery. Mary also manages McKnight Guitars' MySpace site.
Mary is also learning the old world art of French Polish applied spirit varnish. McKnights modified an early 1700's recipe which they were given by another luthier. They adjusted the proportions of natural gums & resins to give the finish more durability than a standard 100% Shellac finish. Although Shellac is considered to be the most acoustically transparent finish, they felt they could improve upon the less than ideal durability by adding some additional (all natural) ingredients to the blonde flake Shellac mixture. They added Gum Sandarac, Gum Benzoin, Gum Mastic and Copal resin to our mixture. McKnights feel the varnish still retains all the tonal benefits of Shellac but is more resistant to scratches and abrasions and has a higher luster.
